Podcast: What Makes a Good Leader and a Good Presentor (Episode 4)

To listen to this podcast, click here.

This week, the Apprenti take aim at...
  1. Synergy's Failure—An old model, a cluttered design, and a bad presentation

  2. Leadership—Tammy and Charmaine both received glowing reviews. Tammy did a great job of "Encouraging the heart" (Kouzes and Posner, Leadership Challange). Why did Charmaine win? Well, Contingency Theory (also called Best Fit Approach; Handy, Understanding Organizations, p. 103) says that Charmaine's style fit the moment.
  3. Brent—Personal skills were certainly not Brent's strong suit. Why shouldn't we cut him some slack and agree with him that he was Synergy's best leader? Well, our data say otherwise (Larson and LaFasto, Teamwork, p. 65). Also, his childlike behavior did not help (De Lassus, Tranzactional Analysis).
  4. Powerpoint Presentations—After Sean's embarrassing attempt at a powerpoint presentation, The Apprenti offer Seth Godin's advice from Free Prize Inside on good (and bad) powerpoint presentations.
Things to look out for? Well, you'll just have to listen to the podcast

Raluca, You brought up some very interesting points but one with which I somewhat disagree is the one about Synergy acting like adults and Brent acting like a child. I believe that, yes, Brent did act like a child and did, indeed, violate the rules of being an executive as you stated but the rest of the team acted like childish parents – not like adults. Yes, they were appearing to take the adult role but they did it in a very chid-like “let’s pick on Brent” fashion. I hardly think they were adult about the whole thing. I think, instead, they were only pretending to be adults.

Other than that, I really like what you both had to say. Keep it coming.

Good point indeed from Mike, even if it's hard with just few minutes per day to really get Brent's behavior you don't change a problem by forgetting it (saying dropping him to a false task in which he will have even more time to think about revenge). I think the team encouraged his behavior but as said before, without a full view of this it's tough to say.
